Today felt like one of those days that just keeps unfolding.

Samuel had his post-op appointment this morning. The doctor removed some of the gauze from his incision and said it’s still draining, so the wick will need to stay in for a few more days. When I changed his bandage later, there was so much pus and fluid—it’s hard to see that and not feel a little overwhelmed. He’s still really sore too, which makes everything just a bit heavier.

They sent a sample from the surgery off to the lab, and it came back as streptococcus. The doctor said he was likely sick at some point, and the infection settled into a lymph node, causing all of this. It’s strange how something small can turn into something so big.

He didn’t feel great after the appointment—I ended up carrying him out to the car. But after talking to his dad on the phone, you could see a shift. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

The doctor recommended independent study for the next two weeks. Thankfully, Christmas break is right around the corner, so he won’t have to go back to school until the new year.

Zachary is on his own little medical journey right now too—he hurt his thumb again last Thursday. We have a follow-up appointment tomorrow. I’m pretty sure he’s fine, but still… you don’t take chances.

Meanwhile, life doesn’t slow down. I have a math final tomorrow and still need to run the mile for PE. It’s the last real week of school—next week is finals only, no actual learning, just testing.

And then… a whole month off.

I can already feel how much I need that reset. I have plans to paint a few things around the house, finally get the kids’ rooms, closets, and the garage organized—projects that have been sitting in the back of my mind for far too long.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, I’m also supposed to give a talk at church on Sunday. No topic yet. No clear direction. Just a quiet hope that if I sit still long enough—search, ponder, and pray—something meaningful will come.

It always does.
